Geneva, Switzerland - Day 2
Thursday, November 11, 2010
Now feeling comfortable with the busses, we headed straight into town (after grabbing breakfast at the bakery across from the bus stop) and began our adventure through Geneva. We walked through parks, monuments, and thought we stumbled upon the UN building, but it turns out it was the Institute de Europe (whatever that is), but we at least took the opportunity to explain to the kids what the UN is. World politics are a little cerebral for 7 & 9 year olds, but they tried to pay attention and then asked politely if they could go play in the park. We relented and let them run through the leaves and the park on Rue de Bastions which runs behind the University of Geneva.
For lunch we dined at McDonalds (because it was easy to walk to) and we had hoped to recoup some of the expense of last night’s dinner. No dice there - lunch for us at McD’s cost about $42. That’s about double what we pay at home. At least the kids had fun with their Tom and Jerry popsicle maker toys! (Swiss Francs are roughly equivalent to the USD - yes, that’s an 11.30 Big Mac meal)
We paid $8 for these. Priorities?
Some souvenir shopping and a ride on the cute carousel for Carl and it was time to head back to Saint Sandoux. Because Raja had work the next day, we wanted to leave in time to make it home for a good night’s rest. We stopped at a roadside town for gas somewhere past Lyon and had dinner at a restaurant called Flunch (like a Souplantation, but not nearly as high quality). Raja was very anxious to get back on the road and dinner was taking forever (we arrived before they were ready for dinner patrons, about 5:45PM, some food wasn’t ready when we ordered). We rushed out into the rain and jumped back into the car. About 45 minutes later we heard a wee voice from the back seat, “Where’s bear blankie?” **STOP THE PRESSES** OMG. We did not forget Carl’s most prized possession did we? Of course we did, back at Flunch. Raja felt guilty for rushing us so he immediately turned around and we headed back to the restaurant. nothing like adding an hour and a half to a four hour trip anyway... We found the blankie much to Carl’s delight and headed back to St. Sandoux, again. The adventures will never cease.
Next to the Flower Clock, a popular tourist stop in Geneva, Switzerland, set next to Lake Geneva.
